History of the Department
Postgraduate training in Emergency Medicine began in 1970 with the
establishment of the nation's first residency at the University of
Cincinnati Medical Center. The residency started with one resident in
1970, and has flourished to its present level of 48 residents over four
years of training. The residency has the full approval of the
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
University Hospital, Inc. is a 665-bed facility completed in 1969. It
is designated a Level I Trauma Center by the American College of
Surgeons. The Emergency Department sees over 90,000 adult patients
annually. A satellite laboratory, x-ray facility, CT scanner and
pre-hospital care base station are located in the Emergency Department. Separate 24 hour per day Emergency Psychiatry and
Social Service teams are also present in the Emergency Department.
